A short history

California was home to more Indigenous nations than any other future U.S. state, including the Ohlone, Chumash, Yurok and Miwok, before Spanish missions and later Mexican rule reshaped the land from the late 1700s. The United States annexed California after the Mexican-American War, and the 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill triggered a rush that brought statehood in 1850, the 31st state, and permanently altered the region's demographics and economy.

Twentieth-century California became a global centre of invention and culture: Hollywood built the American film industry from the 1910s, wartime aerospace and shipbuilding boomed around Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and postwar growth in Silicon Valley made the state synonymous with technology innovation from semiconductors to the internet.

Today California is the most populous U.S. state and, on its own, one of the world's largest economies, anchored by technology, entertainment, agriculture and tourism. Its geography spans Pacific beaches, redwood forests, the Sierra Nevada and desert basins, giving visitors an unmatched range of landscapes within a single state.

Bodhi

Yosemite's granite walls, like El Capitan and Half Dome, were carved by glaciers that scoured the valley thousands of years ago, and it was naturalist John Muir's writing about the place that helped convince Congress to protect it as a national park in 1890.

Drive Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur at first light instead of midday — the fog usually burns off by mid-morning and you'll have the pullouts at Bixby Bridge practically to yourself before the tour vans show up.

When to go

Year-round; the coast is mild always, the deserts shine in winter, the mountains in summer.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Mild on the coast and in the south; snow closes high Sierra passes and fuels ski resorts.

Spring (Mar–May)

Wildflower blooms in the deserts and green hills before the dry season sets in. Spring break fills San Diego's beaches and the Palm Springs pool scene.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Warm inland and desert heat, but coastal fog often keeps San Francisco cool.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Often the best weather statewide, with clear skies and warm days into October.
