What is the best area to stay in Chengdu?
For first-time visitors, the central core around Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li and Tianfu Square is the easiest base — it puts shopping, restaurants, temples and metro lines on your doorstep, with hotels at every price. Families who have come mainly for the giant pandas often prefer a hotel out near the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in the north, so they can reach the enclosures early before the crowds.
Is Chengdu walkable?
The central districts are pleasant and flat to walk, and areas like Taikoo Li, Chunxi Road, Wenshu Monastery and the Jinli and Kuanzhai alleys are best explored on foot. Chengdu is a very large city, though, so between neighborhoods most people rely on the clean, inexpensive and extensive metro or a quick ride-hail. If you stay centrally you can walk to a great deal and take the metro for the rest.
When is the best time to visit Chengdu?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable, with mild temperatures and the best chance of clearer skies. Summers are warm, humid and often overcast, while winters are cool, damp and grey but rarely freezing. Spring and autumn are also kinder times to watch the pandas, who are far more active when it is cool.
