Fly Fishing in Colorado — the Gold Medal Waters, and What They Really Mean
Curated by Our Guild Explorers · Checked against Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 2 October 2026
Colorado has thirty-nine Gold Medal Waters, and “Gold Medal” is not a slogan a lodge may award itself. It is a designation Colorado Parks and Wildlife applies on two measures: how many larger fish a water holds, and its total weight of fish per acre. A water can pass one test and fail the other, and one on this page does exactly that.
This is a first, deliberately short Colorado book. Every fact below comes from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s own pages and is dated. Where we have not checked something — guides and hatch calendars — we say so plainly rather than fill the space.
Book it. Then fish it.
Destinations Guild is a travel reservation site as well as a fishing library. Every water we write about has two buttons here: hotels in the river town, and vacation homes — the cabins and houses a party of three or four actually wants, with a kitchen for the pre-dawn breakfast and somewhere to hang the waders.
Rooms and houses are booked through our partner Expedia. Destinations Guild earns a small commission when you book, at no extra cost to you.
The Arkansas headwaters — where a first Colorado trip should go
One river, 152 miles of it, six sections, and the longest run of Gold Medal water in the state.
Arkansas River — Leadville to Lake Pueblo
If you have one week and want to fish a different piece of water each day without moving hotel, this is the answer. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area runs the length of the upper river, and it is divided into six named sections: Leadville to Buena Vista, Buena Vista to Salida, Salida to Vallie Bridge, Vallie Bridge to Parkdale, Parkdale to Cañon City, and Cañon City to Lake Pueblo. Base yourself in Salida or Buena Vista and most of it is within an easy drive.
Be aware that this is also Colorado’s busiest whitewater river through the summer. That is not a reason to stay away — it is a reason to be on the water early, and to ask locally which sections the rafts are running on the day you fish.
Confirmed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 2 October 2026 — CPW’s own page for the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area describes “a 152-mile stretch of the Arkansas River” running from “Leadville on the north end to Lake Pueblo on the south end”, and calls it “the longest continuous (100+ miles) Gold Medal fishing waters in Colorado”, with “102 miles of Gold Medal trout fishing”. CPW does not name best months on that page, and we are not going to invent any.
Spinney Mountain Reservoir — the one with the rules
Still water, trophy fish, and a tackle restriction that is worth reading twice before you drive out.
Spinney Mountain Reservoir, South Park
A Gold Medal still-water fishery in a quiet corner of South Park, reached from Lake George. It is the Colorado water most likely to surprise a visiting angler, because alongside the trout it holds northern pike of a size that has made it known well beyond the state.
The restriction is the thing to understand. This is a flies-and-lures water, and CPW words it unusually plainly — nothing with a scent, nothing with a taste. If you turn up with bait you will not be fishing.
Confirmed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 2 October 2026 — CPW’s own Spinney Mountain State Park page: “Spinney Mountain is a Gold Medal fishery in a quiet and secluded portion of South Park”, “known internationally for its trophy-sized northern pike, rainbows, cutthroats and browns”, and “Fishing is strictly flies and lures only; nothing with a scent and nothing with a taste. Bait fishing and snagging are both prohibited.” The park address is at Lake George, Colorado. Rules change — check the current page before you go.
Pearl Lake — a Gold Medal population, not a Gold Medal lake
A distinction worth making, because it tells you what you are fishing for.
Pearl Lake, north of Steamboat Springs
Pearl Lake is the one to put beside a Steamboat Springs holiday, and the wording of its designation matters: it is the cutthroat trout population that is designated Gold Medal, rather than the lake as a whole. In practice that means you are going for cutthroat, and anything else is a bonus.
It is a genuine drive from town — CPW’s own directions run twenty-seven miles in three legs — so treat it as a day out rather than an evening’s fishing after dinner.
Confirmed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 2 October 2026 — CPW’s own Pearl Lake State Park page: “The cutthroat trout population at Pearl Lake is designated as Gold Medal”, and “Brook trout, brown trout and grayling are occasionally reported.” Its printed directions from Steamboat Springs are west two miles on US 40 to County Road 129, north twenty-three miles to Pearl Lake Road, then two miles east. That page states no tackle restriction, which is not the same as there being none — check the current regulations for the lake.
The Rio Grande at Coller — the water that misses by half
This is the most useful entry on the page, because it shows you what the designation actually measures.
Rio Grande River, within Coller State Wildlife Area
You will find this stretch described as Gold Medal in plenty of places. Colorado Parks and Wildlife does not quite say that, and the difference is instructive: it meets the standard for the number of larger fish, and falls slightly short on biomass — the total weight of fish the water carries per acre. So: good fish, fewer of them than the standard wants.
The limits here are tight and specific, and they are the reason the larger fish exist. Rainbows go straight back, every time.
Confirmed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 2 October 2026 — CPW’s own page for this water holds rainbow and brown trout and states: “It meets Gold Medal standards for the number of larger fish; however, biomass estimates are slightly below the Gold Medal standard.” Also: “Fishing is by artificial flies and lures only”, the bag and possession limit and maximum size for brown trout is “two fish, 12 inches in length”, and “All rainbow trout must be returned to the water immediately upon catch.” It lies in Mineral and Rio Grande Counties. Limits change — read the current page.
The licence, plainly
Three things to get right before you leave home, and one of them catches people out.
Who needs one, what it costs, and the odd thirteen-month year
From sixteen. Children of fifteen and under fish free in Colorado, so every adult in the party needs a licence of their own.
The habitat stamp is separate, and it is not optional. This is the one visitors miss: the stamp is bought alongside the licence, one per year. There are exemptions for certain licence holders, so ask when you buy rather than assuming one applies to you.
The licence year is thirteen months, not twelve. An annual licence runs 1 March to 31 March, which means a licence bought for a trip in, say, September is still good the following March.
Confirmed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 2 October 2026 — CPW’s own fishing licences page: “Youth aged 15 and under fish for free”; “Annual fishing licenses are valid March 1 through March 31 (13 months)”; and “All anglers must purchase a habitat stamp with their license. One habitat stamp is required per year.” The annual resident habitat stamp was listed at $12.76, with exemptions named for some licence holders. Prices change every year. Confirm the current figure with CPW when you buy, and buy from CPW rather than any third party.
Where to base yourself
The towns, named plainly — and an honest word about why there is no hotel link beside each one yet.
The towns that serve each water
For the Arkansas headwaters: Salida or Buena Vista for the middle sections, Leadville for the top, Cañon City for the bottom. Salida is the most practical single base for a week.
For Spinney Mountain: Lake George, which is where the park address sits.
For Pearl Lake: Steamboat Springs, twenty-seven miles south of the lake, and much the most comfortable town on this page.
For the Rio Grande at Coller: the San Luis Valley, in Mineral and Rio Grande Counties.
Three or four of you? Take a house, not four hotel rooms. This is how fishing parties actually travel, and it is the one piece of advice on this page that will save you real money. A condo or a cabin gives you a kitchen for a pre-dawn breakfast, somewhere to hang waders that is not a bathroom, a drying room for boots, a table to tie at, and one bill instead of four. In the fishing towns on this page it is often the better-value stay as well as the more comfortable one, because Salida, Buena Vista, Leadville and Lake George are small towns with limited hotel stock and plenty of private houses. Our whole-house and vacation-home guide covers cabins and lodges, condos and apartments, and large houses, with the questions to ask about stairs, cancellation terms and the real total price before you pay — and it is where to start if there are more than two of you.
Booking each town. Our booking links point at a specific place rather than a name, because names are treacherous — ask us about the Havana that turned out to be in Florida. On 3 October 2026 we pinned each fishing town on Expedia — Salida, Lake George, Steamboat Springs and South Fork for the Rio Grande — and checked that every link lands on the right Colorado town. Hotels and vacation homes for all four are in the Book it. Then fish it. box at the top of this page.
What we have not checked, and will not pretend to have
The part of a fishing page most sites leave out.
Three honest gaps
No hatch calendar. Our main fly fishing book carries month-by-month hatches and fly patterns for the Bighorn, the Madison, the Yellowstone, Henry’s Fork, the Green, the White and Lees Ferry, because those were worked through river by river with the local shops. Colorado has not had that work done yet. Rather than guess at it, we have left it out, and it is the first thing that will be added.
No guides listed. We have not yet checked outfitters on these waters, and we do not list a guide we have not checked.
Four waters, not thirty-nine. Colorado Parks and Wildlife counts thirty-nine Gold Medal Waters. This page covers four of them, because four is what we could verify from the agency’s own pages this morning. The rest will follow at the same standard.
