A short history
Georgia's forests and river valleys were home to the Creek (Muscogee) and Cherokee nations, whose removal along the Trail of Tears in the 1830s remains one of the darkest chapters in the state's history. Founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe as the last of the thirteen original colonies, Georgia was conceived partly as a haven for debtors and a buffer against Spanish Florida, with Savannah as its meticulously planned first city.
Georgia ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788 as the fourth state, and its plantation economy built enormous wealth on enslaved labour before the Civil War, when Union General Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864 devastated much of the interior. The 20th century brought Atlanta to national prominence as a rail hub and, later, as the cradle of the American civil-rights movement led by Atlanta-born Martin Luther King Jr.
Modern Georgia mixes a dynamic Atlanta economy in logistics, media and film production with the preserved antebellum beauty of Savannah's oak-shaded squares and the Golden Isles' resort history. The Blue Ridge Mountains in the north add hiking and waterfalls to a state that spans coastal marsh, Piedmont cities and Appalachian foothills.
Savannah's famous grid of 22 shaded squares dates back to founder James Oglethorpe's original 1733 city plan, one of the earliest examples of planned urban design in America.

Warm, blooming and one of the best times to visit, with azaleas flowering in Savannah and Atlanta. Tybee Island and the coast draw spring-break beachgoers.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Hot and humid statewide, especially inland; the coast offers sea breezes but also heavy afternoon storms.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Comfortable temperatures return, with fine fall colour in the Blue Ridge Mountains by late October.
