Indiana — State Facts
A short history
Indiana's name means 'land of the Indians,' reflecting the Miami, Potawatomi, and Shawnee nations who lived across its forests and prairies before French fur traders and later American settlers moved in during the 18th century. It became part of the Northwest Territory, then its own Indiana Territory in 1800, and achieved statehood in 1816 as the 19th state.
The 19th century brought canals, the National Road, and railroads that made Indiana a Midwestern crossroads, while Indianapolis, planned as a centrally located capital, grew into a manufacturing and transportation hub. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909, and its first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 launched a motorsport tradition that remains central to the state's identity.
Indiana's economy today mixes manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics with a growing life-sciences sector, while Lake Michigan's dunes, limestone quarries, and university towns like Bloomington round out a state known for practical Midwestern hospitality and a deep-rooted basketball culture.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted its first 500-mile race back in 1911, and the bricks from that original surface still form the finish line "Yard of Bricks" today.
