A short history

Michigan's land was long home to Anishinaabe peoples, including the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi, whose fishing and trading networks spanned the Great Lakes centuries before French explorers and fur traders arrived in the 1600s, founding outposts like Sault Ste. Marie and later Detroit in 1701 as a strategic post between Lake Erie and Lake Huron.

Ceded to Britain after the French and Indian War and to the United States after the Revolution, Michigan became the 26th state in 1837. Its position on the Great Lakes made it an industrial giant through the 20th century, most famously as the birthplace of the American automobile industry, with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler transforming Detroit into 'Motor City' and giving rise to the Motown sound.

After decades of industrial decline, Michigan's cities are rebuilding around arts, food and technology while its natural assets remain untouched: more freshwater shoreline than any other state, the dune country of Lake Michigan, and the remote, forested Upper Peninsula connected by the Mackinac Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension spans.

Bodhi

Michigan touches four of the five Great Lakes and has more freshwater shoreline than any other state, which is why locals just call them 'the lakes' like there's no other kind. Mackinac Island still bans cars, a rule that dates back to 1898 when horses spooked at early automobiles.

Nolie

Head to Sleeping Bear Dunes right around sunset in late summer, when the light hits Lake Michigan gold and the tour buses have already left. And do not leave the state without a proper pasty up in the Upper Peninsula, that's the mining-town hand pie, not the other kind.

When to go

Summer and early autumn; the north is glorious in September.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Snowy and cold, especially in the Upper Peninsula, with skiing and snowmobiling in the north.
