A short history

Long home to the Osage, Missouria, and other nations, Missouri became a fur-trading crossroads after French settlement at Ste. Genevieve and St. Louis, then passed to the United States with the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. St. Louis served as the launch point for Lewis and Clark, and later for wagon trains heading west on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails.

Missouri entered the Union in 1821 under the Missouri Compromise, a slave state whose divided loyalties spilled into brutal guerrilla fighting during the Civil War. Kansas City and St. Louis grew as rail and river hubs, drawing immigrants who built the state's brewing, meatpacking, and manufacturing industries along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.

Today Missouri blends deep Americana with modern industry: the Gateway Arch commemorates westward expansion, Kansas City and St. Louis both claim barbecue supremacy, and Branson thrives on live entertainment. Aerospace, agriculture, and biotech now anchor an economy still rooted in the state's crossroads geography.

Bodhi

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, finished in 1965, marks the city's role as the literal jumping-off point for westward expansion, where Lewis and Clark's expedition actually launched in 1804. Mark Twain grew up along the Mississippi in Hannibal, and that river town still shaped every word he wrote about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

Nolie

Kansas City barbecue joints like Arthur Bryant's get the fame, but ask a local and they'll send you to a smaller spot in a strip mall for the burnt ends nobody photographs. Go to the Ozarks in early fall, the lake crowds thin out and the hills go every shade of orange along Table Rock Lake.

When to go

Spring and autumn are best; summers are hot and humid.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Cold with occasional snow and ice; a quiet season for city museums and indoor attractions.

Spring (Mar–May)

Mild and green, though thunderstorms and tornado risk pick up by late spring.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Hot and humid, ideal for Ozark river floats but best paired with air-conditioned breaks.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Warm days, cool nights and good colour in the Ozarks make this the most comfortable stretch.
