Sandhills, pioneer trails and the greatest wildlife show on the Great Plains.

Nebraska doesn't shout about itself, but the Oregon Trail ruts are still carved into the ground here, if you know where to look.
It's the state everyone drives through and nobody quite expects to fall for. Trust me on this one.

A short history

Nebraska's plains were home to the Omaha, Pawnee, Ponca, and Lakota peoples long before the Platte River valley became the main highway for westward migration. The Oregon, California, and Mormon trails all funneled through Nebraska, leaving landmarks like Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff as waypoints still visible from the road today.

Nebraska became a territory in 1854 and a state in 1867, its settlement accelerated by the Homestead Act and the transcontinental railroad, which crossed the state and made Omaha a major rail and stockyard hub. Farming and ranching shaped the Sandhills and prairie counties, while waves of European immigrants built farming communities across the plains.

Today Nebraska remains an agricultural powerhouse, particularly in corn, cattle, and ethanol, alongside Omaha's growing finance and insurance sector, home to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Each spring the Platte River hosts one of the continent's great wildlife spectacles as hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes stop to rest and feed.

Chimney Rock was the single most-mentioned landmark in pioneer diaries along the Oregon Trail, a signal to travelers that the easy plains were ending and the hard climb into the Rockies was about to begin. Scotts Bluff nearby served the same purpose, a natural gateway carved by wind and water that wagon trains funneled straight through.
