A short history
North Carolina's coast and piedmont were home to Cherokee, Catawba and Tuscarora peoples before English colonists established the ill-fated Roanoke colony in the 1580s, whose disappearance remains one of America's enduring mysteries. Permanent settlement followed in the 1650s, and North Carolina became one of the thirteen original colonies before ratifying the US Constitution in 1789.
Agriculture, particularly tobacco and cotton, shaped the state's economy through the 19th century, and North Carolina seceded during the Civil War before rejoining the Union in Reconstruction. In 1903 the Wright brothers achieved the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks, a milestone the state proudly claims as its own, cementing its motto as First in Flight.
Modern North Carolina balances Research Triangle Park's technology and biotech economy around Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill with textile and furniture-making traditions further west. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains draw hikers and leaf-peepers, while the Outer Banks' barrier islands and Asheville's mountain arts scene round out one of the South's most varied states.
The Wright brothers chose Kitty Hawk for its steady winds and soft sand to land on, and made the first powered flight there in December 1903. The Blue Ridge Parkway, meanwhile, was a Depression-era public works project, built largely by hand over more than 50 years to link the Smokies to Shenandoah.

Everybody crowds the Parkway overlooks at peak fall-color weekends — go on a Tuesday instead, and stop at Craggy Gardens rather than the famous viewpoints; it's just as stunning with a fraction of the cars. On the coast, eat at the no-name fish shacks in Wilmington's riverside neighborhoods, not the boardwalk chains.
