A note on the Sheraton Pretoria. For years the obvious luxury answer in Pretoria was the Sheraton, directly opposite the Union Buildings. It is now listed as permanently closed — Marriott no longer carries a page for it and it cannot be booked through Trip.com — so we have taken it off this list rather than send you to a hotel that cannot take your reservation. If you see it advertised elsewhere, confirm directly with the property before paying.

Should I stay in Pretoria or in Johannesburg?
Pretoria is the administrative capital and is quieter, greener and more relaxed than Johannesburg, about an hour away by road and around forty minutes on the Gautrain. Stay here if your business is in the city, if you want a calmer base, or if you are heading north towards the Waterberg or Limpopo. Stay in Johannesburg if you want the museums, the restaurant scene and the shorter airport run.
Which Pretoria neighbourhood suits a visitor?
Hatfield is the liveliest, close to the university and the embassies, with its own Gautrain station and plenty of places to eat. Menlyn and Menlyn Maine are the modern shopping and hotel district to the east. Arcadia sits near the Union Buildings and the older embassy quarter and is central for sightseeing. All three are comfortable, and Hatfield is the easiest without a car.
When do the jacarandas bloom?
Pretoria’s jacaranda trees usually flower from around the middle of October into November, turning whole avenues purple. It is the city’s best-known sight and worth timing a visit around if you have the flexibility. Exact timing shifts a little from year to year with the weather.
How do I get here from the airport?
The Gautrain runs from OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria and Hatfield stations, with a change at Marlboro, and takes roughly an hour in total. It is the simplest way in without a car. Ride-hailing apps operate throughout the city, and a hire car is useful if you plan to explore the surrounding province.
