Common questions about where to stay in Tangier
Should I stay in the Kasbah and medina, or along the corniche?
The Kasbah, on the hill at the top of the old town, has the views, the history and the small character hotels, and the medina below it is where the atmosphere is. The corniche curves along the bay below with larger hotels, pools and beach access, and is easier if you are arriving with a car or want a straightforward seaside base. The city centre between them holds the grand old landmark hotels.
Is Tangier a good gateway to and from Spain?
It is the main one. Fast passenger ferries run from Tanger Ville port, right by the city, across to Tarifa in about an hour. Most vehicle ferries to Algeciras use Tanger Med, the larger container and passenger port roughly forty kilometres east of the city, so check which port your crossing actually uses before booking a hotel around it.
Is Tangier still the bohemian city of its reputation?
Partly. The international-zone years that drew Bowles, Burroughs and Matisse are long gone, and Tangier today is a fast-growing port and industrial city with a rebuilt marina and a high-speed rail link to Casablanca. What survives is real enough: the Kasbah lanes, the Grand Socco, the old cafes and the extraordinary light over the Strait. Come for that rather than for a literary theme park and you will not be disappointed.
How many nights does Tangier need?
Two nights is comfortable, giving you a day for the Kasbah, the medina and the Grand Socco, and time to run out to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules on the Atlantic side. It also works well as a first or last stop in Morocco, since the high-speed train reaches Rabat and Casablanca quickly from here.
