Which area is best to stay in Xi'an?
Inside or right beside the Ming city walls, around the Bell and Drum Towers, is the most convenient base — you can walk to the Muslim Quarter, the markets and the metro, and reach the Terracotta Army by bus or car. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda area to the south is quieter and greener, with newer luxury hotels and the Shaanxi History Museum close by.
Is Xi'an walkable?
The old walled city is very walkable and flat, and you can even walk or cycle the full 14-kilometre loop along the top of the city wall itself. Beyond the walls the city is large, but the metro is clean, cheap and easy to use, and the Terracotta Warriors sit about an hour outside town, so set aside a half day for that trip.
When is the best time to visit Xi'an?
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant, with mild days and clear light on the wall and pagodas. Summers are hot and sometimes hazy, while winters are cold but quiet with the lowest room prices; the city wall and the Terracotta Army are worth seeing in any season.
