Should I stay out at Giza near the Pyramids or in central Cairo?
It depends on what you have come for. Giza puts you at the foot of the pyramids and close to the Grand Egyptian Museum, and some hotels there have pyramid views from the room or the roof. Central Cairo, meaning Zamalek, Garden City and Downtown, is better for the Nile corniche, the restaurants and the older Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. Cairo traffic between the two can be slow, so choose the side where you will spend most of your days rather than trying to split the difference.
What is Zamalek like as a base?
Zamalek occupies the northern half of Gezira Island in the middle of the Nile. It is the leafiest and calmest of the central districts, full of embassies, galleries, bookshops and good restaurants, with Nile views from both banks of the island. It is a comfortable, walkable base for travellers who want to be central without the noise of Downtown.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum easy to reach from these hotels?
The Grand Egyptian Museum stands on the Giza plateau side of the city, a short drive from the pyramids themselves, and opened in full in November 2025. Staying in Giza puts both the museum and the pyramids within easy reach. From Zamalek or Garden City it is a longer trip across the river, and worth setting aside most of a day for.
Is a Nile-view room worth paying extra for?
A river-facing room is one of the pleasures of a Cairo stay, particularly at the hotels along the Garden City corniche and on Gezira Island. Be aware that hotel websites sometimes describe a partial or angled outlook as a Nile view, so confirm the exact room type on the booking page before you pay rather than assuming the view comes with the address.
