The questions travellers ask most before booking a room on Jeju.
Which part of Jeju should I stay in?
Jeju City in the north is 10 to 15 minutes from the airport and has the restaurants, the markets and the ferries — the easy choice for a short stay. Seogwipo, on the south coast, is smaller and prettier, with waterfalls and a good market. Jungmun, just west of it, is where the resort development is concentrated. The north-east coast has the best beaches and the boats to Udo island, and the south-east is the quietest corner, under the sunrise peak of Seongsan Ilchulbong.
How do I get from the airport to the south of the island?
Seogwipo is about 40 km away, across the middle of the island, so this is a real journey rather than a hop. Bus 600, the airport limousine, runs to Jungmun and on to Seogwipo for around 4,500 won and takes roughly an hour to Seogwipo, longer to the far end of the route. Buses 800 and 801 go via the Jeju bus terminal in about an hour and a quarter, and the 101 and 102 express buses run down the east and west coast roads. A taxi is 40 to 50 minutes and somewhere around 35,000 to 45,000 won.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not strictly, but be honest with yourself about it. Jeju's buses are cheap and go almost everywhere, yet they can be infrequent, and the island's sights are spread wide apart. If you are not driving, the sensible move is to stay near the part of the island you actually came for rather than planning to hop about from a single base. The bus fare is around 1,200 won with free transfers inside 40 minutes, and licensed taxi day tours run to roughly 150,000 won for eight hours.
How do I pay for the bus?
Not with cash. Jeju took all of its bus routes cashless, and since August 2025 it has been the first place in Korea to accept contactless Visa tap-to-pay directly on the bus — an overseas card, a phone or a watch will do. A T-money card still works too. Arriving with nothing but banknotes is the way this goes wrong. And as everywhere in Korea, use KakaoMap or Naver Map rather than Google Maps for timetables and stops.
How many nights should I give Jeju?
There is no single right answer, and we would rather say so than invent one. What the island rewards is giving one corner of it your proper attention — two or three nights in the south, say, or on the north-east coast — instead of trying to drive a full circle in a weekend. Jeju is bigger than it looks on the map, and the coast road is slow in the best possible way.
