Which area of Kuala Lumpur should I stay in?
KLCC for the Petronas Towers, the park and the grand hotels — the smartest, calmest base, and the easiest for a first visit. Bukit Bintang for shopping and eating, with the malls and Jalan Alor food street on the doorstep and the monorail at hand; it is livelier and noisier. Chinatown for character and the best value, among the temples, markets and old coffee shops. The three are close enough that the choice is about atmosphere rather than convenience.
How do I get in from the airport?
The KLIA Ekspres train is the straightforward answer: 28 minutes from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral, a further 3 minutes if you are arriving at Terminal 2, and departures every 20 minutes all day, every day, including public holidays. From KL Sentral you connect onward to the city’s rail lines or take a short taxi ride. A road transfer takes longer and costs more in traffic, so the train is usually the better choice even with luggage.
Is Kuala Lumpur easy to get around without taxis?
Easier than its reputation suggests. The LRT, MRT and monorail between them reach almost everywhere a visitor wants to go, and they are cheap, air-conditioned and simple to use. Bukit Bintang and KLCC are joined by a covered, air-conditioned walkway, which is the single most useful thing to know about getting around central KL on foot — it turns a sweaty ten-minute trudge into a pleasant one. Ride-hailing fills the gaps cheaply.
What is the weather like, and when should I go?
Kuala Lumpur is warm and humid in every month of the year, and rain is possible in any of them. The saving grace is the shape of it: rain here usually arrives as a heavy afternoon or evening storm that clears, rather than as a grey all-day drizzle, so it rarely ruins a day’s sightseeing. Plan the outdoor part of the day for the morning, keep a mall, a museum or a long lunch in reserve for the afternoon, and carry an umbrella.
How many nights should I give Kuala Lumpur?
Two to three nights suits most visitors — enough for the towers, the caves, a market or two and a serious amount of eating, without the city outstaying its welcome. Many travellers use KL as the hinge of a longer Malaysian trip, pairing it with Penang or Langkawi, and for that a couple of nights at each end of the journey works well.
